Leading Irish palliative care consultants oppose introduction of euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Please find below a public letter from Irish palliative care consultants who are “gravely concerned” about the proposed introduction of euthanasia/assisted suicide in Ireland.

The letter published in the Irish Times included 17 strong signatories who are all members of the Irish Palliative Medicine Consultants’ Association.

They expressed collective alarm that the Dying with Dignity Bill will have a particularly negative impact on “people who already struggle to have their voices heard in our society – older adults, the disabled, those with mental illness and others”.

The doctors have based their reasoning on the fact that such people “may be made to feel a burden to their families and come under pressure to end their lives prematurely.”
